Two days in Skopje is enough to fall in love with the city. It is not enough to see everything — but if you follow this itinerary, you will leave having experienced the real Skopje, not the tourist version of it.
One rule before you start: go local. Eat Macedonian food. Drink Macedonian wine, Macedonian beer, Macedonian rakija. When your drink arrives, raise your glass and say Aj na zdravje! — you will get a smile every single time.
Do not spend two days in Macedonia eating dürüms and drinking Italian wine. You can do that at home. You came here for something else — and something else is exactly what Skopje will give you if you let it.

Day 1 — The Old Heart of Skopje
Morning — Start in the Old Bazaar
Start your first morning in the Old Bazaar — Čaršija — early, before the heat of the day builds and before the streets fill up.
The Čaršija is one of the oldest and best-preserved Ottoman bazaars in the Balkans, continuously operating since the 12th century. Narrow cobbled streets wind between mosques, craft workshops, goldsmiths, carpet sellers, and coffee houses that have been doing exactly this for generations.
It is not a museum and it is not a theme park — it is a living, working part of the city.
Breakfast in the Bazaar: Find a local bakery and order burek — flaky pastry filled with cheese or meat, baked fresh every morning. Eat it warm.
Important: Look for Macedonian food — tavče gravče, grilled meats, kebapi, fresh salads with local white cheese, ajvar. Ask the waiter what is the most Macedonian dish and order that.
Spend at least two hours in the Bazaar. Get slightly lost. That is the correct approach.
While You Are in the Bazaar — Visit the Green Market
Right next to the Old Bazaar sits the Green Market (Zelen Pazar), where locals buy fresh vegetables, fruit, cheese, and herbs every morning.
Walk through the stalls, smell the produce, and grab something small to eat. This is real Skopje.

Late Morning — Kale Fortress
Walk uphill to Kale Fortress — a medieval fortress overlooking the city.
The view from here is the best panoramic view of Skopje — the Stone Bridge, Macedonia Square, the river, and the mountains surrounding the city.
Midday — Macedonia Square and the Stone Bridge
Cross the Stone Bridge into Macedonia Square — the dramatic centre of modern Skopje.
The Warrior on a Horse statue dominates the square, surrounded by fountains and neoclassical buildings.
Lunch: Order tavče gravče and pair it with Macedonian wine or beer.
Afternoon — Vodno Mountain
Take a taxi to Vodno Mountain and ride the cable car to the Millennium Cross.
The views over Skopje are incredible, and the temperature is cooler than the city.
Allow at least two hours.
Evening — River Promenade
Walk along the Vardar river promenade, where the city comes alive in the evening.
Dinner: Order grilled meat or a mixed grill and a glass of Vranec wine.
Stay late tourist, Skopje evenings are long and full of life.
Day 2 — Beyond the Centre
Morning — Debar Maalo
Start your day in Debar Maalo, the heart of Skopje’s café culture.
Order Macedonian coffee, your favorite, or espresso and a coke if you had too much Vranec last night and enjoy a slow, relaxed morning.
Late Morning — Mother Teresa Memorial House
Visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, born in Skopje in 1910.
A quiet and meaningful place that tells her life story.
Afternoon — Matka Canyon
Take a taxi to Matka Canyon, about 15 minutes from the city, maybe a bus, find out the number of the bus in some of our articles.
Take a boat ride through the canyon, explore caves, or hike the trails.
This is one of the most beautiful places in Macedonia.
Evening — Debar Maalo
Return to Debar Maalo for your final evening.
Find a bar, kafana or some local spot, order rakija and meze my friend and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
This is the Skopje you will remember.
